The Melbourne Numismatic Society's first meeting for 2018 will be held on Thursday 8th February. The topic for discussion will be “A new numismatic item or something old”. I wonder who will bring the newest, a coin , medal or note from 2018? Or who will bring the oldest such as a coin of King Caratacus like that shown here. As usual please feel free to bring along any new acquisitions to tell us about and enjoy a coffee, biscuit and chat at the end of the meeting.
Despite the silly song about the ladies of his court there really was a King Caratacus. He ruled the British Celtic tribe called the Catavellauni during the first half of the first century AD. This coin, auctioned by Downies in 2015, is a silver unit with a head of Hercules and the letters CARA on the obverse. The reverse shows an eagle standing on a snake.

With pleasure we present our March 2018 auction featuring 719 lots totalling $377,640.
There is something for everyone, with strength in gold coins, Islamic coins, British and European historic medals, Swiss shooting medals and thalers, higher grade British coins from Elizabeth I to Victoria, New Zealand decimal banknotes, tokens, errors and predecimal coins.
We introduce live online bidding, through our website and Auction Mobility, a Boston company. International bidders should note that grading accords with standards for each market, being more conservative than US grading companies for most world coins.
We extend the catalogue with some interesting gold and other jewellery, watches and antiques and numismatic books.
Particularly exciting opportunities include:
- The unique 1895 New Zealand 5-pounds pink postal note in EF with an estimate of $17,500, one of just four known, issued to be a banknote.
- The famous 1772/3 Resolution & Adventure medal in platina, estimated at $5000, and available to all bidders with its northern hemisphere provenance, held by one family for a century.
- British silver coins ranging from hammered to Crowns from 1662 including George III, George IV, 1845, 1847 Gothic, Victoria Jubilee and Old Head and Edward VII, in higher grades.
- Sovereigns from 1817 onwards including near complete dates from 1817 to 1825 with the rarely seen 1823 and 1825. GB 1887 2 Pounds in EF and AU extend the sovereign range.
- 69 hammered Islamic coin lots, including 41 gold, from AH 60 (AD 680) onwards. These are great value, mostly in the $200 to $600 range, based on both bullion and rarity. Further milled Islamic coins, including Ottoman, Egyptian, Saudi Arabian & Moroccan are in the World sections.
- More than 200 gold coins and medals in total.
- Military medals number 26 lots.
- 64 banknote lots include 6 NZ trading banknotes, 3 Lefeaux notes from a relative of Lefeaux’s, Reserve Bank decimal issues, with first and scarcer last prefixes, star notes and the Hardie $1 to $100 same number set and World accumulations.
- A Waitangi proof set and single Crown.
- Fully UNC NZ early predecimals and NZ error coins including three great brockages, wrong planchets, mules and a rare undated 10 cent 2011 proof set.
- New Zealand and Australia tokens include many higher grade, scarcer examples with 4 different Lipman Levy types, AS Wilson, Forsaith, Morris Marks, Gourlay and Anderson.
- The NZ 1879 pattern penny in AU, estimated at $5500.
- World coins range over affordable accumulations to Canadian, Chinese & Hawaii $1s, a Russian 1842 platinum 3 roubles, Tongan 1967 Palladium set and a small ancient selection.

New Yass Auction Rooms to Host Auction 223
Exciting news for Edlins customers is that Edlins Auctions will now be run from our Yass shop/office premises from 2020. The reasons are many and varied. Although the lack of parking and difficulty accessing the Canberra Auction rooms has been the deciding factor. The Canberra store will still be open for normal trading. Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturdays from 9.00 to 1.00pm. Vendors may still also submit their Auction lots through the Canberra store if that is their preference. We would encourage clients with large holdings to attend our Yass store as the logistics of parking and unloading are much easier with free two hour parking literally 3 metres from the door of the Yass store.
The online version of the Auction catalogue will be posted to the internet by the 1st February 2020. Enquiries to edlins@nulltpg.com.au.

Update from Noble Numismatics: 11:32am AEDT, Tuesday 25 March
These are unprecedented times and it is crucial that we all act with the best interests to protect the health of our families, colleagues and communities.
Therefore, in accordance with Federal Government guidelines on gatherings, we advise that our auction is now online only.
We continue to closely monitor the rapidly evolving situation and will advise all clients should any further changes be necessary.
As a precautionary note, we anticipate that the volume of online bids will lengthen session duration.
All those who intend to bid live must pre-register at Invaluable.com. Pre-sale bidding is unaffected and may be completed via www.noble.com.au or by submitting an absentee bid form.
Our opinion of the market remains very positive and this is supported by strong results in recent overseas auctions, including record prices at a major auction last week.
We thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging time and look forward to your participation at the auction. Finally, we wish to express our support to all our colleagues and families in the wider numismatic community who have been affected by this crisis.
